Less invasive colon screening
Up until now, colonoscopy has been seen as an uncomfortable and inconvenient procedure, but the V3D-Colon from Viatronix may change all that. This virtual colonoscopy system works by inflating the colon with carbon dioxide. Next CT images are taken. The images are then segmented back together to create a clean three-dimensional colon reconstruction. The program then allows you to navigate through the virtual image.

The V3D system has all the necessary hardware and software components needed for interactive 3-D and 2-D views of CT and MRI images. It consists of two main components, the 3-D-Processor and the V3D-Viewer. The 3-D-Processor receives the images from the imaging device (CT, MRI, etc), and it generates a 3-D electronic model. The V3D-Viewer then receives the 3-D electronic model created by V3D-Processor and utilizes advanced graphical algorithms to display the 3-D model. The V3D-Viewer also allows the user to interactively move through the colon. The procedure lasts about 15 minutes and requires no anesthesia.

Administer IVs safely
Avoid errors when administering IV medication with B. Braun Medical's Horizon Outlook IV Safety System with DoseScan. According to a 2001 report from the Agency for Health Research and Quality, adverse drug events cause more than 770,000 injuries and deaths each year. The Horizon Outlook system guards against the primary causes of IV medication errors, patient matching and manual programming errors, using DoseScan technology.

Using pharmacy-generated barcode labels (one identifies the patient while additional barcodes identify the infusion parameters) the Outlook system matches the patient with the medication and provides automated programming of infusion parameters. The clinician scans his or her ID Badge to verify authorization. He or she then scans the patient's ID and the ID on the medication bag to confirm a match. The medication parameters are then scanned into the device to provide automated programming. After the clinician validates the information, the infusion can be started. Secondary protection is also provided by means of the DoseGuard software. This software provides the clinician notification if pre-programmed dose limits are exceeded.

The system costs $7,845 per device. For further information, please call B. Braun Medical at (800) BBRAUN2, go to www.bbraun.com, or circle 147 on the Reader Service Card.

Avoid a stick with a click
The Terumo SurGuard needle protection system can help you convert your traditional syringes to safety syringes. This system has a needle-locking mechanism, which was designed to prevent needlestick injuries. It is compatible with all types of syringes, and it is available with or without an attached needle. The system has four parts: the syringe, the colored luer connector, a safety sheath attached to the connector, and the covered needle. To assemble the system, grasp the needle cover and with a push and a clockwise twist, attach the syringe to the colored luer connector and tighten. Tighten the needle and sheath by twisting the needle clockwise onto the sheath, and remove the needle protector by pulling it straight off. Once you are finished with the needle, gently press the sheath against a hard surface, such as a table or countertop. When the sheath is pressed and the needle is firmly embedded in the sheath, there is a click. When the needle is locked in place, you can then dispose of the syringe and sheath without the risk of needlesticks. The SurGuard sheath with needle comes in a variety of sizes, ranging from 18 G by one inch to 25 G by one inch. Without the covered needles, the sheath and luer connector come in a longer size, used with one-inch to one-and-a-half inch needles, and shorter size for smaller needles.

The SurGuard starts at approximately $.30. For further information, please call Terumo at (800) 283-7866, go to www.terumomedical.com, or circle 148 on the Reader Service Card.
