Remove Patient IDs From IV Bags With Ease

At our hospital, we place infusion and patient identification labels on all IV solutions we administer. When the IV solution is discontinued, we must remove the patient identification label and place it in the shredder for HIPAA reasons. Here are 2 ways to easily remove that label from the IV bag.

  • Fold blank label in half. As pictured in photos 1a and 1b, fold a blank label in half, with the sticky backing facing outward, and place it under the middle of the patient identification label as it’s stuck to the infusion bag. You can then remove the patient identification label by placing your finger under the blank, folded label.
  • Create a pull-tab. As pictured in photos 2a and 2b, fold one corner of the patient identification label when placing it on the infusion bag to create a pull-tab, which you can then use to remove the ID label.
