The Key to Well-Stocked Specialty Carts

We have more than 10 specialty carts stationed in our sterile core: emergency carts, a mesh cart, suture carts, and so on. Inventorying them all is a daunting task for one person to handle on her own. So when my staff have downtime, I'll assign a couple of nurses or techs, whoever's available, to check a couple of carts each to help out. They follow what we call the 3 O's system:

1. Organize the items in the cart.
2. Check for outdates.
3. Order items that are low.

Not only will your specialty carts be fully stocked, but your staff will know the cart's contents and set-ups the next time they need to retrieve something fast.
