Medicare requires surgical facilities to have an emergency plan in place for rare and dire events that could take place in a healthcare setting. Of course, even the most comprehensive emergency plan won’t help if staff members have a difficult time accessing the info they need to implement it. That’s why Eye 35 ASC in Schertz, Texas, created a dedicated place that’s easy to find and access for storing emergency-related materials. “It’s a red box where we keep all our policies for emergency situations, emergency contact information, vendor and utility numbers, and our staff’s phone tree and role cards,” says Carson McCafferty, MSN, RN, CNOR, CSSM, CSRN, the center’s clinical director. “If something goes down, all we have to do is grab the box and initiate the response plan.” OSM
