Ideas That Work: Empower Staff With ‘Opportunity for Improvement’ Cards

Enhancing employee safety is an ongoing process, not a one-and-done initiative. That’s what led Brandy Ginzinger, RN, director of surgical services at UCF Lake Nona Medical Center in Orlando, to create her department’s Opportunity for Improvement (OI) program. All surgical team members are encouraged to fill out colored “OI cards” if they spot an issue that needs to be addressed. The cards prompt staff to define the problem, share their idea to solve it and note the expected benefits of doing so.

Unlike the anonymous “drop it in the suggestion box” feel of similar programs, staff are encouraged to include their names on OI cards, as well as note other providers or administrators who should provide input, such as leadership, a surgeon or another team member. The completed cards are handed in to department leaders. Even better, the OI card program keeps submitters aware of when and how the issue is being handled. Once received and placed in process, the OI cards are posted on the department’s summit board, which tracks metrics and process improvements. By then, the backs of the cards are filled out with the date they were acknowledged, along with implementation steps, verification of results and completion dates. “Everyone can see the staff-submitted ideas and what’s being worked on,” says Ms. Ginzinger. “They know their voice is being heard in making changes. They’re empowered to act together to help create a safer environment where all ideas and voices are recognized.” OSM
