AORN Presses for RN Circulator Mandate in D.C. ASCs

Publish Date: 1/9/2013

The District of Columbia Department of Health is considering the addition of new regulations for the licensure, construction and operating standards for ambulatory surgical facilities. Consistent with AORN’s Position Statement, One Perioperative Registered Nurse Circulator Dedicated to Every Patient Undergoing a Surgical or Other Invasive Procedure, AORN has submitted comments to urge the Department of Health to include a requirement for an RN circulator to be present for each operating room for the duration of each operative procedure.

There are currently 16 states that require a RN circulator in ambulatory surgery centers: Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Hawaii, Illinois, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Washington and West Virginia.
