BSN Requirement Considered in New York

Publish Date: 2/6/2013

A bill requiring New York registered nurses to earn a bachelor’s degree within ten years of initial licensure has been introduced in the New York legislature. This is the second time New York has considered a “BSN in 10” bill. A01977-B/S02553 was introduced in the 2011-2012 legislative session but did not pass out of committee before the session ended and therefore died.

A03103/S00628 is identical to the bill ran in 2011/2012. Should this bill pass, nurses currently licensed in New York and students in programs preparing for registered professional nursing as of the effective date would be exempt from this requirement. The bill is focused on future nurses graduating from associate degree or diploma nursing programs.
