AORN participates in White House call on ACA

Publish Date: 3/18/2014

On Tuesday, March 11, AORN participated in a call with the White House and First Lady, Michelle Obama. The purpose of the call was to provide an update on Affordable Care Act (ACA) exchange enrollment, discuss upcoming initiatives, and thank those who have been involved with the enrollment efforts. Thousands of enrollments events have been held, and over 1 million doors have been knocked on to inform people about the ACA. Over 4 million individuals have enrolled in insurance plans through the exchanges. First Lady Michelle Obama personally thanked call participants for their dedication and hard work to inform citizens about new health care options.

The First Lady encouraged people to keep pushing to enroll individuals in health insurance plans. As the March 31st enrollment deadline nears, the White House is ramping up efforts. In fact, WebMD interviewed President Obama about the Affordable Care Act on Friday, March 14. Other efforts launched recently include #GeeksGetCovered and the Your Mom Cares campaign.

Open enrollment in the Health Insurance Marketplace began October 1, 2013 and ends March 31, 2014. Individuals, families and small businesses are able to research and compare plans, and purchase coverage through the Marketplace. As the most trusted profession and source of health information, nurses are uniquely positioned to play a critical role in this phase of implementation of the Affordable Care Act. Nurses have exclusive opportunities to share information with patients, communities and fellow nurses about the importance of health insurance coverage to the health of all Americans.
