New York: BSN requirement considered
Publish Date: 6/9/2014
In early 2013 a bill was introduced in New York requiring
New York registered nurses to earn a bachelor’s degree within ten years of
initial licensure, A3013/S628.
The bill did not move during 2013, but has recently been moving through
committees as New York’s legislative session is coming to a close. In May, the
BSN in 10 bill moved from the Assembly Committee on Higher Education to Codes,
and it is now in the Committee on Ways and Means.
Should this bill pass, nurses currently licensed in New York
and students in programs preparing for registered professional nursing as of
the effective date would be exempt from the BSN requirement. The bill focuses
on future nurses graduating from associate degree or diploma nursing programs.
