Anesthesiologist J.C. Gerancher, MD, of the Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C., has been charged with 3 counts of indecent exposure for allegedly exposing himself to the same woman 3 times, police said.

In late September, Winston-Salem police said 3 women were walking along a sidewalk near a YMCA at about 11:30 a.m. when Dr. Gerancher exposed his genitals to them. One of the women told police Dr. Gerancher had exposed his genitals to her twice before.

Eleven days before this alleged incident, the Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center had placed Dr. Gerancher on administrative leave after the hospital was notified of similar allegations that occurred on the campus of Winthrop University. Dr. Gerancher was spotted during the afternoon jogging between the cars in a parking lot and looking around, said a witness. The witness told police that Dr. Gerancher ran up to a woman getting into her car and "pulled his shorts up so that his genitals were displayed." The woman covered her eyes, shook her head, got into her car and drove away, according to a police report.

"Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center was shocked to learn from Winston-Salem Police about three misdemeanor charges of indecent exposure filed against faculty member, John Charles Gerancher, MD," the hospital said in a statement.

Dr. Gerancher, who has worked for Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center since September 1999 as a faculty member, anesthesiologist and pain management specialist, has been quoted in several Outpatient Surgery Magazine articles about regional anesthesia, including this 2009 article and this 2011 article.

A voice message left for Dr. Gerancher was not returned.
