The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has updated its recall warning involving H&P Industries' povidone-iodine prep pads to note the fact that they have been found in Lee Medical International's custom dialysis trays and kits.
H&P Industries initiated a voluntary recall of all lots of the prep pads in April after testing revealed contamination of the antiseptic pads with Elizabethkingia meningoseptica, a bacteria that could cause severe infection in surgical patients, immunocompromised patients and infants.
The prep pads have been distributed under such brand names as Cardinal Health, Triad, VHA, Medical Specialties, North Safety, Total Resources and Atwater Carey. Throughout the year, the FDA has periodically updated its recall warning to add to the list of brand names and kits in which the pads have been included.
Clinical consumers should not use the pads, but contact H&P Industries to arrange a return.
The manufacturer 3M has issued a statement noting that its DuraPrep iodine povacrylex and isopropyl alcohol skin prep product is not affected by the recall.
