FANTASY FOOTBALL
Can a Little Competition Improve Your Start Times?

How did we get our on-time start average to jump from 38% to 72% in just 3 months? With some friendly competition inspired by fantasy football. We first picked 2 high-performing staff members, an RN and surgical tech, and named them "quarterbacks." The quarterbacks confidentially picked team members for their teams by choosing one at a time from an employee roster. Each team also had a high-performing CRNA as a "safety."

The competition lasted for 3 months. Every time a staff member was part of a case that started on time, her fantasy team earned 1 point. This motivated all staff to work together to start cases on time, every time. At the end of the season, the team with the most total points won a trophy and T-shirts. The staff had fun and the game worked. Our on-time starts increased by almost 30% between the start and end of the competition, and they're now hardwired at 85%.
