CHECKERBOARD SCHEDULING
Surgeons Can Bounce From One OR to the Next
Maximize efficiency and make your physicians happy by using checkerboard scheduling. Here's how: Instead of making surgeons wait around while ORs get turned over, schedule the same surgeon in 2 ORs and stagger procedure times accordingly. Since most cases take about an hour, sometimes less, we can have the surgeon start in OR1 at 7:30 a.m. while making sure his next case in OR2 is ready at 8:15 a.m. or 8:30 a.m. Our staff can then spring into action turning over OR1, so when he finishes the second case, he can immediately start on his third, and so on throughout the morning. That way, a surgeon can get through a whole day's worth of cases by early afternoon. Then we can have a second surgeon arrive and do his cases the same way. Our surgeons love it.
