We all want our physicians to dictate their operative reports immediately following surgery. And of course that doesn't always happen. When they don't report in a timely fashion, we call and fax letters to their office, but we decided to put a positive spin — literally — on the whole process. To incentivize same-day reporting, we came up with a spinning wheel to reward doctors and their staffs. It's a monthly contest — we call it the Same Day Best Way Monthly Drawing. To enter, physicians must dictate their cases the same day they perform them. We monitor our dictation service reports daily. For each day they dictate all of their cases on the same day, we enter their name into a drawing. The doctor who wins the drawing spins the wheel to determine which prize will be awarded to his staff. The prizes are mainly food: fruit and chocolate parties, cake, cookies, meals. Our docs like the competition. We like the effectiveness. Since we started the monthly drawings, in September, our same-day compliance has increased by about 24%.
