Ideas That Work: Prevent Cuts Caused by Suture Thread

Recently, Edward Oates, MD, a trauma and orthopedic surgeon in Germany, posted a question to #orthotwitter: “How do you avoid cuts to your distal interphalangeal joints when using suture thread?” After many providers replied saying they suffer from the same injury, Dr. Oates received a simple tip to save his skin. He now applies small strips of adhesive tape that are used on incisions on his distal joints between his glove layers. “No more cuts,” Dr. Oates posted on Twitter. “I escaped a patella tendon reconstruction uninjured today!” OSM
