New research suggests the SedLine brain function monitor from Masimo can be used to identify older patients at risk of developing post-op delirium after elective procedures. Masimo says parameters derived from electroencephalogram (EEG) spectra indicate an increased risk for the complication that occurs in up to 60% of patients after major surgery. According to the study, low spectral edge frequency and the absence of slowing in EEG during the transition of consciousness to unconsciousness are associated with post-op delirium. The findings could be used to identify an underlying pathophysiology of the condition and suggest measuring brain functioning might improve the care of elderly patients.
