Ideas That Work: MH Escape Rooms Bolster Team-building

Practical pearls from your colleagues

If you want your staff to recall their training long after the in-service is done, you’ve got to make it fun, engaging and challenging. That’s why OAM Surgery Center at MidTowne in Grand Rapids, Mich., hosted an escape room for its malignant hyperthermia (MH) training. After all, if people pay money to take part in escape rooms during their precious off-hours, such an event is likely to keep staff engaged while they’re at work.

Throughout the course of the MH escape room training — which was just one of the events OAM Surgery Center held during an education day geared toward keeping staff compliant with CMS and AAAHC regs — staff solved MH-related clues in order to save a patient. “It captured the staff’s attention and was the perfect team-building exercise,” says OR Manager Grace Patton, MBA, BSN, RN, CNOR. “Each group was timed, and the winning group received gift cards.” OSM
