A 75-year-old man has been arraigned and jailed on $1 million bail for allegedly shooting to death a urologist he may have blamed for his prostate issues, according to a news report. Detectives recovered a handgun at the scene of the shooting — an exam room in a medical office Newport Beach, Calif. — and found additional evidence at Stanwood Elkus's home in Lake Elsinore, according to the report.
Mr. Elkus is accused of shooting 52-year-old Ronald F. Gilbert, MD, FACS, on Monday afternoon at the medical office near Hoag Hospital, according to CBS News, which reports that "neighbors said Elkus was angry about his incontinence following a recent surgery. It is unclear whether Gilbert was the physician who treated Elkus for prostate problems," but Dr. Gilbert appeared to be the only target of the attack.
Dr. Gilbert specialized in general urology, sexual dysfunction and related surgical techniques since 1993, according to a biography. He was an assistant clinical professor at University of California College of Medicine, Irvine; on staff at Hoag Memorial Hospital in Newport Beach, Calif.; and the chief technology officer of Absorption Pharmaceuticals LLC. The bio also notes that Dr. Gilbert was once a stockbroker and a singer in a rock band.
