Pittsburgh Physician Accused of Poaching Lion in Zimbabwe

Alleged illegal hunt occurred months before recent "Cecil" outcry.

A Pittsburgh-area physician is drawing unwanted attention for his alleged role in the illegal bow-hunting death of a lion in Zimbabwe. This disclosure follows the international furor that erupted after the revelation that a Minnesota dentist had killed an iconic lion during an expedition in the same area.

Jan Seski, MD, who specializes in gynecologic oncology, has been implicated by the guide who helped facilitate last month's killing of Cecil the lion by Minnesota dentist Walter Palmer, DDS. The guide, Headman Sibanda, says Dr. Seski was also a client and that he participated in an illegal lion hunt in April. Mr. Sibanda has been arrested and is cooperating with Zimbabwean authorities.

Dr. Seski, 68, who directs the Center for Bloodless Medicine and Surgery at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, has been an avid big-game hunter and can be seen on various websites posing alongside various slain animals, including elephants, a hippopotamus, a zebra and an ostrich.

Zimbabwean officials, who are seeking to have Dr. Palmer extradited and tried, have not said whether they'll seek Dr. Seski's extradition. Dr. Seski could not be reached for comment.
