During appointments in our eye clinic, staff document the music preferences of patients in their charts. On the day of surgery, pre-op nurses refer to the charts — or ask patients about their favorite artists and songs — and communicate the music preferences to members of the surgical team, who make sure to have requested tunes playing when patients arrive in the OR. Patients are not under general anesthesia during eye surgery, so they notice the music we have playing and often ask for songs throughout the case. Playing a patient's favorite artist in the OR makes the environment more relaxed and personal, which helps them have a more positive surgical experience.
