Candy
SWEET TREATS John Christoforetti, MD, shows off the candy dish he presents to patients after their ultrasound-guided injections are completed.

One of the best ways to fight back against the notion that high-volume procedures at busy facilities are the epitome of impersonal, assembly-line care is to add a personal touch whenever possible. Even the smallest efforts can have a major impact. That’s what Dallas-based orthopedic surgeon John Christoforetti, MD, recently discovered. After his patients undergo ultrasound-guided injections, they’re immediately offered a sweet treat from a candy dish. Dr. Christoforetti got the idea after he invited Elizabeth Bardowski, MSN, APN, ACNP-BC, a Nashville-based nurse practitioner, to his facility to speak about in-office ultrasound-guided injections during a course about arthroscopic hip surgery. Ms. Bardowski gave a fantastic technical instruction and included the reminder to present patients with a candy treat after the procedure. The advice connected with Dr. Christoforetti and reminded him of times in his childhood when visits to doctors’ offices ended with a lollipop on the way out the door. Since Ms. Bardowski’s talk, Dr. Christoforetti has offered candy treats at his own practice.  “It has been universally well received, and it’s a simple way to turn anxiety into smiles,” he says. OSM
