Invite Feedback on Your Leadership

It’s easy for leaders to use a particular leadership style that may not actually be effective for their team members or even suit themselves. Some leaders might feel they are flying blind in terms of their leadership approach, but don’t want to show vulnerability or doubt to their team. A certain vulnerability and openness, however, is key to leading people in good faith. A valuable annual exercise is to sit down with your team members and ask how they feel about your leadership — and specifically if they feel there are drawbacks to your approach. This exercise is an example of “flat culture,” a democratic organizational philosophy that helps organizations foster better communication and inclusion while boosting morale.
