Alex Haynes, MD, MPH

Surgical Oncologist and Researcher

Alex Haynes, MD, MPH, is a surgical oncologist and health services researcher who currently serves as the associate chair for investigation and discovery for the Department of Surgery and Perioperative Care at Dell Medical School at the University of Texas Austin.

His academic career has focused on the development, testing, and scaled implementation of teamwork-based interventions to improve surgical care delivery. He initially worked as part of the team that helped develop the World Health Organization Surgical Safety Checklist, and was subsequently involved in multiple efforts to implement checklist-based safety programs at scale. He continues to be engaged in domestic and international efforts to improve surgical care delivery.

Prior to joining the faculty at the University of Texas, he was an associate professor of surgery at the Massachusetts General Hospital and the Harvard Medical School, as well as the director of the Safe Surgery Program at Ariadne Labs.
