Maine’s Legislature Looks at Surgical Technologist Certification and Regulation

New legislation in Maine, LD 1582, would require certification of surgical technologists in the state. Under the proposal, a health care facility could not employ or contract for the services of a surgical technologist unless the surgical technologist has successfully completed a nationally accredited education program and maintains certified surgical technologist credentials. Federal health facilities and individuals practicing in a federal health care facility are exempt.
Additionally, the bill provides for continuing education requirements. Surgical technologists would be required to complete 30 hours of relevant continuing education every two years to remain eligible to practice and keep their certifications current.
AORN is monitoring the bill for its effects on perioperative practice and patient safety in operating rooms.
