Time Out DayCongratulations to AORN members of the Greater Houston Chapter. This year, in honor of Time Out Day on June 10, the chapter was successful in obtaining proclamations from four area cities: Pasadena, Pearland, Sugar Land and Houston.

Since 2004, AORN has promoted national Time Out Day to bring greater awareness to the safe surgery practice of taking a “time out” before operative and other invasive procedures to prevent wrong site, wrong patient, wrong procedure surgery. And each year, AORN members have celebrated the national awareness day by educating members of their communities about the crucial safety practice of taking a time out.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, perioperative nurses have taken on new roles, redeploying to ICUs and educating other provider colleagues on the safe and effective use of the PPE surgical nurses use daily in the operating room. As hospitals and ambulatory surgery centers across the country resume elective surgeries, it is more important than ever to recommit to evidence-based safety practices like the time out.
