5 Transformational Nurse-led Research Projects

How can you improve your surgical safety checklist participation or reduce health care-acquired infections? Answers to these challenges aren’t easy, but AORN poster presenters have set out to solve these and more. You can view the latest work of research teams from around the world at AORN’s Global Surgical Conference & Expo 2018 in New Orleans.

Here’s a preview of some of the innovative research our perioperative colleagues are conducting to transform care.

1. Positive Deviance Methodology Applied to the Surgical Checklist

Objective: To increase the adherence to the complete execution of the Time Out by all members of the team through the positive deviance methodology that engages stakeholders to make changes.

2. Civility in the Operating Room

Objective: To explore relationships between personal characteristics, professional characteristics, self-efficacy, perception of civility within the operating room environment, and barriers to working in the operating room environment in efforts to increase civility among perioperative professionals.

3. Transforming Care: Operating Room Design Reduction of Surgical-Site Infections in Cardiothoracic Surgery

Objective: To reduce the incidence of surgical site infections in cardiothoracic surgery through renovation of laminar airflow units, with a new workflows integrated systems and through changes to disposable surgical drapes and sterilization practices for processed instruments.

Lead Author: Paweena Naenna, Senior Nurse Manager, King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital in Bangkok, Thailand.

4. Purposeful Partnerships: Communication + Collaboration + Cohesion = SafeDay

Objective: To eradicate patient care errors through multidisciplinary engagement to implement the “SafeDay” program in order to foster communication, collaboration, and cohesive practices.

5. Risk Factors for Healthcare Associated Infection Caused by Carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteria

Objective: To evaluate the risk factors, such as colonized patients, those with cancer, those with pressure injury, and those who were hospitalized in ICUs associated with health-related infections caused by enterobacteria producing carbapenemase carrying the blaKPC gene in the hospital environment.

All posters will be judged by clinical experts who serve on AORN’s Global Surgical Conference Education Advisory Committee or Nursing Research Committee. Several posters will receive top honors for excellence. We will announce the Attendee Choice Awards in the Expo Daily News during the week of the conference.
