Unplanned retained surgical items (RSIs) remain a significant issue for perioperative teams. The Joint Commission reports RSIs were among the top five reported sentinel events from 2018 – June 2022.
RSIs can cause significant postoperative complications and even death. Unplanned RSI can also affect professional reputations of perioperative personnel and result in loss of revenue for facilities.
