Connecting clinical excellence directly to leadership expectations is essential in developing strong perioperative leaders. Establishing this connection ensures that leaders possess both the necessary clinical expertise and the leadership skills to guide their teams effectively.
One of the main challenges in cultivating perioperative leadership is the absence of a universal model that bridges clinical and leadership competencies. Without such a framework, organizations may struggle to develop leaders who are proficient in both domains.
In response to this challenge, Kate Ulrich, MS, BSN, RN, NEA-BC, senior vice president of surgical services, and Yessenia V. Salgado, DNP-ENL, RN, NE-BC, CNOR, senior director of Clinical Operations for surgical services at Tampa General Hospital, collaborated with their leadership team to develop a tailored perioperative leadership model. This initiative was undertaken to address the unique needs of their organization and bridge the gap between clinical and leadership skills.
And it's working.
