Goals to Reality: Transforming Your Team’s Results

How to engage all team members in making a measurable difference in your organization.

Can every person on your team articulate your organization’s top priorities, and how they contribute to meeting those goals? If not, you’re far from alone.

Getting all team members directly involved in understanding and contributing to the success of the organization improves employee engagement, satisfaction, and retention.

To do this, Pamela Hunt, MSN, RN, NEA-BC suggests bringing the team together to create the action plan. She outlines how to inspire the team to problem solve, work together, and achieve their “Team Dream” during the virtual Leadership Summit session Building Back Together.

Hunt suggests holding an all-staff retreat to connect goals to the entire team and collaborate on how to meet those goals.

Although investing the time and resources for a retreat may seem difficult, the payoffs are worthwhile:

  • Better team communication
  • Behaviors that align with goals
  • Positive peer pressure to meet the goals
  • Improved understanding and cooperation

Advance communication is critical for a successful retreat. Let leadership know your purpose and expected outcomes. And set staff expectations for what they’ll gain from participating.

To make the most of the retreat time together, create an intentional agenda that:

  • Sets the stage with what’s happening in healthcare nationally and locally.
  • Updates everyone on the direction and goals of the organization, including the past year’s goals and results.
  • Connects team members to each other through practical teambuilding activities, such as understanding communication styles.
  • Produces SMART goals and tactics to achieve the goals.

Afterwards, to keep the Team Dream alive and moving forward, ensure the goals and progress are visible throughout the year. This could include regular updates at team meetings, a tracking board, and rewards for reaching milestones.

If you couldn’t catch Hunt’s session, the recording will be available in the on-demand library starting Aug. 10 through Sept. 24.
