AORN Goes to Washington D.C.

Last month AORN member Jackie Monahan and Associate Director of Government Affairs, Danielle Glover, attended the 10th anniversary of the Nursing Community Coalition in Washington, D.C. AORN has been a member of the Nursing Community Coalition (NCC) since its inception. The Nursing Community Coalition is a partnership of national professional nursing associations that builds consensus and advocates on a wide spectrum of healthcare issues. Collectively, the Nursing Community Coalition is comprised of 60 national nursing organizations that represent the cross section of education, practice, research, and regulation within the practice.

The anniversary celebration started with remarks from the Executive Director, Suzanne Miyamoto, PhD, RN, FAAN and was followed by panels discussing the value of the community and its history. Collaboration and championing issues with a collective voice are two qualities AORN values in working with the NCC. Having a single, powerful voice can move the nursing agenda forward. The relationships, networking, and communication with other member organizations helps AORN better represent perioperative registered nurses while also uplifting the work our colleagues are doing.

After the luncheon program, member organizations went to the Hill to speak with Members of Congress about three specific NCC requests: Cosponsor Title VIII Nursing Workforce Reauthorization (S. 1109); Include Section 303 of H.R. 6 in any final opioid package; and Support a Senate Companion Bill to the Cadet Nurse Corps Equity Act.

Through the lens of perioperative nursing, AORN spoke with the staff of Senator Gardner (R-CO) about these three important issues. AORN also extended an offer to Sen. Gardner and his office to visit AORN’s headquarters to learn more about perioperative nurses, the role they play in patient safety, and AORN’s mission.

The day ended with a congressional reception where NCC honored the Nursing Caucus co-chairs, and the co-chairs spoke about the need to remain diligent in our work to keep people healthy and safe.
