What is Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS)?
ERAS uses evidence-based protocols to improve patients’ physical and psychological conditions before, during, and after surgery. It involves the entire perioperative team in a coordinated plan tailored to each patient to enhance outcomes and speed up recovery.
The Impact of Implementing an ERAS Program
High-quality evidence supports that an ERAS program benefits the patient.1
Successful program implementation depends on process measures that are tied to patient outcomes and specific patient groups, such as older adult patients, pediatric patients, and patients in marginalized populations. For example, care plan elements may include steps in preop to prevent surgical site infection; planning for minimally invasive surgery techniques and measures to maintain normothermia during surgery; and customized postoperative pain management.
