Combating Bullying and Incivility

Purpose

Bullying and incivility expose patients to preventable risks that impact patient safety, and they also threaten the healthcare team's ability to function effectively. This tool kit provides perioperative team members with resources to combat bullying and incivility in the surgical suite. Managers and educators will find case studies, simulation scenarios, and a presentation for use in professional development activities. All team members can use the tool kit resources to learn how to recognize, prevent, and respond to incivility and bullying in the workplace.

The purpose of this tool kit is to:

  1. Empower perioperative managers, educators, and staff members to recognize and address incivility and bullying.
  2. Provide resources to help OR team members prevent and mitigate bullying.
  3. Describe strategies and tools perioperative nurses can use to address bullying.
  4. Provide perioperative nurses and managers with strategies to create a healthy workplace culture that supports collegiality and respect.
