Address the Nursing Shortage: Put the Expertise of Legacy Nurses to Work for You

The perioperative nursing shortage remains a challenge for nurse leaders, particularly because it is unlikely to end anytime soon.

One strategy being discussed is to leverage the expertise of perioperative nurses who are approaching retirement or have already retired – "legacy nurses".

Joanne Oliver-Coleman, BSN, RN, CNOR(E), a retired nurse with more than 60 years of perioperative experience, says many of these nurses want to continue to contribute to the perioperative profession, and the think tank team identifies opportunities for them to do so.
