Ophthalmic procedures require precision, specialized equipment, and coordinated perioperative care.
This course prepares perioperative nurses to support patient safety and procedural success across ophthalmic surgeries in both inpatient and outpatient settings.

Course Overview
This course provides key topics for the perioperative nurse to increase their knowledge and assist them in providing optimal care for the patient undergoing an ophthalmic procedure in the inpatient or outpatient setting.
The course includes an anatomy review, procedure indications, and information about patient care before, during, and after an ophthalmic procedure.
Learners will explore:
- Ocular anatomy and common indications for ophthalmic procedures
- Types of ophthalmic procedures performed in surgical settings
- Safe perioperative practices before, during, and after ophthalmic surgery
- Basic equipment, medications, instruments, and procedural workflow
Course Outcome
On successful completion of this course, 90% of learners will recall the responsibilities related to caring for patients undergoing ophthalmic procedures, as evidenced by achieving a score of at least 80% on the final exam.
Course Objectives
At the completion of this course, learners will be able to:
- Identify common indications for an adult patient to undergo an ophthalmic procedure
- Describe the types of ophthalmic procedures that may be performed
- Discuss safe perioperative practices when caring for a patient scheduled for an ophthalmic procedure
- Describe the basic equipment, medications, instruments, and workflow for ophthalmic procedures

After completion of the course and course evaluation, the learner will receive 2.0 contact hours.
