Medical Laser Safety for Operators

This course provides perioperative nurses with the foundational knowledge needed to recognize laser-related hazards and apply appropriate safety practices to support safe laser use during perioperative procedures.

Information for Facilities and Surgery Centers

Course Overview:

This course prepares perioperative personnel serving as laser operators to safely support medical laser procedures.

  • Participants will learn foundational laser concepts, identify laser hazards, and apply the control measures required to reduce those risks.
  • Learners will integrate these principles into a structured perioperative workflow and respond effectively in the event of a laser-related injury or emergency.

This course is designed primarily for the laser operator: the team member responsible for setting up the laser system and operating the laser console under the direction of the laser user, the credentialed health care professional who controls how the laser is applied for its intended purpose within their scope of practice.

Learners Will Explore:

  • Preparing the laser and procedural environment, supporting required laser safety controls, monitoring laser equipment during use, and assisting with documentation and post-procedure activities.
  • Surgical capabilities and benefits of medical lasers.
  • Understanding laser hazards, laser-related injuries, applying safety controls to prevent injury, and emergency response.
  • Laser safety roles and workflows.

Course Outcomes:

90% of learners will be able to identify laser-related hazards and apply appropriate safety control measures to reduce risk to patients and health care personnel during medical laser procedures, as evidenced by achieving a passing score of at least 80% on the posttest.

Course Objectives:

At the completion of this course, learners will be able to:

  • Explain foundational laser concepts that influence laser-related risks and safety precautions in perioperative practice.
  • Identify laser-related hazards and explain how laser exposure and injury may occur to patients and perioperative personnel.
  • Apply appropriate control measures to reduce laser-related risk to patients and perioperative personnel.
  • Describe the roles and responsibilities that support safe laser use and apply laser safety practices before, during, and after laser procedures.
  • Take appropriate response actions in the event of laser-related emergencies, injuries, or adverse events.
