The perioperative environment can be overwhelming. Bright lights, strange sounds, new faces, it's a scary place for any child but more so for those with sensory sensitivity.
This course gives perioperative nurses the tools to meet those moments with skill and empathy.
Course Overview
You'll learn how to anticipate sensory, communication, and behavioral needs to ensure every child feels safe, seen, and supported through surgery.
Learners will explore:
- Common sensory challenges present in neurodivergent children
- Communication strategies to qualm anxiety and emotional strain
- Behavioral characteristics of sensory-sensitive pediatric patients and what it means for processes and workflow
- Strategies to minimize sensory overload, promote effective communication, and support emotional regulation
Course Outcome
On successful completion of this course, learners will be able to demonstrate the latest in evidence-based knowledge related to the application of inclusive, individualized care practices for sensory-sensitive neurodivergent pediatric patients, as evidenced by completion of an interactive clinical scenario activity.
Course Objectives
At the completion of this course, learners will be able to:
- Spot common sensory, communication, and behavioral characteristics that can affect surgical care.
- Build an individualized care plan across pre-op, intra-op, and post-op phases.
- Partner with caregivers as collaborators, not bystanders.
- See where your own practice can shift to better serve sensory-sensitive kids.
