Preparing for the Scrub Role is designed for perioperative nurses new to the scrubbing / sterile field role. The course utilizes a blended learning model to provide nurses with the basic knowledge and clinical skills that are necessary to transition to the scrubbing / sterile field role.

Course Objectives

  1. Describe sterile technique and its application to the scrub / sterile field role.
  2. Identify key elements of the sterile field.
  3. Describe how to set up and prepare for a surgical procedure.
  4. Explain the scrubbing / sterile field role and how it coordinates with the circulating role and the roles of other perioperative team members.
  5. Describe how to manage the sterile field during a procedure.

Special Considerations

It is recommended that learners take an introductory course to perioperative nursing, such as Periop 101 or be an experienced perioperative nurse before taking this course.
