Course Overview

Periop 101: A Core Curriculum is used by more than 2,500 organizations nationwide to recruit, educate, and retain perioperative nurses. Periop 101 is designed for both novice and experienced nurses new to the operating room. This premier program builds staff confidence, optimizes perioperative efficiencies, and currently has more than 40,000 graduates and counting. Periop 101 uses a blended learning model incorporating online didactic content, skills-based labs, and a clinical preceptorship.

Course Outcomes

Periop 101: A Core Curriculum is designed to provide registered nurses (RNs) with the basic knowledge and clinical skills necessary to practice independently. On completion of this course, learners will have the knowledge to work collaboratively and safely with the perioperative team to provide patient-centered care, improve patient outcomes, and decrease recovery time and costs.

Course Objectives

At the completion of the course the student will be able to:

  1. Compare the roles and responsibilities of surgical team members in the preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative areas.
  2. Apply the nursing process to identify and address the needs of the perioperative patient and family or support persons in order to provide a safe environment.
  3. Apply principles of aseptic and sterile technique in the perioperative environment including the processes involved in creating and maintaining a sterile field.
  4. Apply knowledge of safe patient care in the perioperative setting.
  5. Discuss the processes of cleaning, disinfection and sterilization of instrumentation and equipment.
  6. Apply safe medication administration practices based on knowledge of interventions and pharmacologic indications for drugs commonly used in the perioperative setting.
  7. Identify the ethical, moral, and legal responsibilities of the surgical team.
  8. Demonstrate ability to appropriately prioritize perioperative nursing activities relevant to the surgical setting.
  9. Identify opportunities and responsibilities for professional growth as a perioperative nurse.

To earn the contact hours, learners must complete each module posttest with a minimum score of 80%, complete the Course Evaluation, and pass the final exam with a minimum score of 80%.

Periop 101: A Core Curriculum™ ASC Course Outcomes

Course Overview

Periop 101 ASC is an Ambulatory Surgery Center-specific curriculum that utilizes a blended learning model incorporating online didactic content, skills-based labs, and a clinical preceptorship focused on challenges specific to the ASC environment.

Course Outcomes

Preoperative nursing care in the ambulatory surgery center (ASC) is an important aspect of the patient's ambulatory care experience. A thorough preoperative assessment contributes to positive patient outcomes and safety. The additional preoperative assessment criteria that is used to determine whether a patient’s admittance into the center is appropriate for the ASC is supported with written policies and procedures that are in compliance with state licensure laws. The course also addresses ASC postoperative patient care that is comprised of three levels of care which lead to the patient’s return to self-care and wellness. On completion of this course, learners will have the knowledge to work collaboratively and safely with the perioperative team to provide patient-centered care, improve patient outcomes, and decrease recovery time and costs in an ASC environment. 

Course Objectives

At the completion of the course the student will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate understanding of the responsibilities of the perioperative registered nurse (RN) functioning in the circulator role.
  2. Demonstrate understanding of the responsibilities of the perioperative RN functioning in the scrub role.
  3. Describe the processes involved in creating and maintaining a sterile field.
  4. Demonstrate knowledge of safe patient care in the perioperative setting.

Periop 101: A Core Curriculum™ Cesarean Section Course Outcomes

Course Overview

Periop 101: A Core Curriculum Cesarean Section utilizes a blended learning model that incorporates online didactic content, interactive skills labs, and a clinical preceptorship focused on care of the surgical patient undergoing a cesarean delivery. The content of this curriculum has been tailored to meet the educational needs of the registered nurse (RN) who is new to the perioperative environment and/or new to the team performing cesarean sections.

Course Outcomes

On completion of this course, learners will have the knowledge to work collaboratively and safely with the perioperative cesarean section team to provide patient-centered care, improve patient outcomes, and decrease recovery time and costs. 

Course Objectives

At the completion of the course the student will be able to:

  1. Apply principles of aseptic technique.
  2. Describe instrument cleaning, sterilization, and high-level disinfection practices.
  3. Understand the role and responsibilities of the circulating nurse.
  4. Understand the role and responsibilities of the scrub person.
  5. Function in an interdisciplinary team environment.
  6. Explain how overall safety concerns are addressed in the surgical suite.
  7. Explain considerations that must be taken to maintain a family-centered environment when a support person is present in the surgical suite.
  8. Describe maternal and fetal obstetric emergencies and how to manage them.
  9. Identify maternal and fetal indications for cesarean section.
  10. Describe considerations during the preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative phases of care for a patient undergoing a cesarean delivery.
  11. Demonstrate the ability to prioritize nursing activities and interventions in the perioperative setting.
