Overview

Periop 101: A Core Curriculum is used by more than 2,500 hospitals and ambulatory surgery centers nationwide to recruit, educate, and retain perioperative nurses. This premier program builds staff confidence, optimizes perioperative efficiencies, and currently has more than 12,000 graduates and counting.

Course Purpose

Periop 101: A Core Curriculum is designed to provide registered nurses who have no previous experience with the basic knowledge and clinical skills necessary to function independently in an entry- level perioperative nursing position. At the completion of this course, it is expected that the nurse will be able to practice independently at the beginning level in a perioperative position.

Course Outcomes

At the completion of the course the student will be able to:

  1. Compare the roles and responsibilities of multidisciplinary surgical team members in the preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative areas.
  2. Understand the specific role of the perioperative registered nurse in conceptualizing and controlling the perioperative environment through skills labs, case studies and patient care assignments.
  3. Apply the nursing process to identify and address the needs of the perioperative patient and family or support persons in order to provide a safe environment.
  4. Apply principles of aseptic and sterile technique in the perioperative environment including the processes involved in creating and maintaining a sterile field.
  5. Apply knowledge of safe patient care in the perioperative setting through case studies and patient care assignments.
  6. Discuss the processes of cleaning, disinfection and sterilization of instrumentation and equipment.
  7. Apply safe medication administration practices based on knowledge of interventions and pharmacologic indications for drugs commonly utilized in the perioperative setting.
  8. Identify the ethical, moral, and legal responsibilities of the surgical team.
  9. Demonstrate ability to appropriately prioritize perioperative nursing activities relevant to the surgical setting through case studies, and/or patient care assignments.
  10. Identify the opportunities and responsibilities for professional growth as a perioperative nurse.

To earn the contact hours, learners must complete each module posttest with a minimum score of 80%, complete the Course Evaluation, pass the final exam with a minimum score of 80%, and complete the Final Exam Evaluation.

Overview

Periop 101 ASC is an Ambulatory Surgery Center-specific curriculum that utilizes a blended learning model incorporating online didactic content, skills-based labs, and a clinical preceptorship focused on challenges specific to the ASC environment.

Course Purpose

Preoperative nursing care in the ambulatory surgery center (ASC) is an important aspect of the patient's ambulatory care experience. Preoperative assessment criteria are used to determine whether a patient’s admittance into the center is appropriate for the ASC. A thorough preoperative assessment contributes to positive patient outcomes and safety. The goal of the core curriculum is to provide basic perioperative education to novice perioperative nurses utilizing a blended learning format, incorporating various learning modalities including online didactic content; skills based labs and a clinical preceptorship. The additional preoperative assessment criteria that is used to determine whether a patient’s admittance into the center is appropriate for the ASC is supported with written policies and procedures that are in compliance with state licensure laws. The course also addresses ASC postoperative patient care that is comprised of 3 levels of care which lead to the patient’s return to self-care and wellness.

Course Outcomes

  1. Demonstrate understanding of the responsibilities of the perioperative registered nurse when functioning in the circulating role.
  2. Demonstrate understanding of the responsibilities of the perioperative registered nurse when functioning in the scrub role.
  3. Describe the processes involved in creating and maintaining a sterile field.
  4. Demonstrate knowledge of safe patient care in the perioperative setting.

Overview

Periop 101: A Core Curriculum Cesarean Section utilizes a blended learning model incorporating online didactic content, skills-based labs, and a clinical preceptorship focused on care of the C-section surgical patient.

Course Purpose

The goal of this specialized core curriculum is to provide basic perioperative education to the RN Circulator who will be part of the C-section team. The curriculum utilizes a blended learning model incorporating various learning modalities including online didactic content; skills based labs and a clinical preceptorship.

Course Outcomes

  1. Apply the principles of aseptic technique.
  2. Describe sterilization and high-level disinfection practices.
  3. Understand the role and responsibilities of the circulating nurse.
  4. Understand the role and responsibilities of the scrub person.
  5. Function in a multidisciplinary team environment.
  6. Explain how overall patient safety concerns are addressed in the surgical suite.
  7. Explain considerations that must be taken when a support person is present in the surgical suite in order to maintain a family-centered environment.
